Meghan Pulles – Anxiety (2022)

Anxiety is something that a lot of people suffer from, but many people feel alone in their struggles. This is something that Meghan Pulles understands and has infused into her single ‘Anxiety’. Written while she was having a severe anxiety attack, the single was a comfort to her and she hopes will offer comfort to others.

Through the acoustic tones of the single, she reminds us that we are not alone and offers the strength to stand up against anxiety at times. The single is not only a comfort to anyone listening, but it is one of the seed songs that formed the initial blossoms of Pulles’ debut album. Bringing a healing touch to the soundscape, she takes us through a cathartic journey that is a staple of all her songs.

Pulles’ vocals open ‘Anxiety’ alongside the acoustic strum of a guitar. Her vocal performance has an intimate feeling as she pulls you close to share her experience of an anxiety attack. Through the lyrics, she shines the light on the dark fingers of anxiety that try to drag you down. This turns into a tentative step forward that pushes against the overwhelming feeling. This tentative step has a wonderful delicacy that lets you know it is not as strong as others might think. Pulles also confronts anxiety through the lyrics, by questioning why it attacks her, only to firmly state that she will not be brought down by it. For the softness of the performance, there is a steely strength that fills your veins and lets you know that you can also confront the demons like anxiety that plague you. The chorus is beautiful as it brings the struggles of living with anxiety to life.

Beneath Pulles’ beautiful vocals is the gentle strum of the acoustic guitar. This relatively stripped-back melodic flow gives the vocals greater power as they shine. The almost earthy feeling of the guitar offers an organic feeling to the single that bolsters the human element of the lyrics. There are times when the guitars drop for a second to let the emotions of the vocals take over. Together with the vocals, the acoustic guitar-driven melody hooks you to the single and makes you want to listen to it again and again.

Meghan Pulles shares her experiences, while letting us know that we are not alone and can become stronger when we confront our demons in ‘Anxiety’. The delicate acoustic guitar melody allows the vocals to really shine. The lyrics move from the experience of an anxiety attack to the building of strength and the comfort of knowing that you are not alone in what you are going through.
