MBsounds – Get Down (2023)

Bringing his musical prowess to the masses later in life, MBsounds shows all of us young ‘uns what the older generation can do. Self-taught by watching YouTube tutorials and reading online articles, MBsounds is a 60-year-old retiree who began arranging, mixing and mastering royalty-free releases approximately five years ago. While his career took shape in the past years with features on Less Than 1000 Followers, this is The Other Side Reviews’ introduction to the UK-based musician. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Get Down’.

On the heels of his single ‘Waiting For Your Call’, MBsounds adopts an old-school soul sound in ‘Get Down’. Bringing a vintage vibe to the “retro soul” single, MBsounds has us tapping our toes to this laidback song; however, the upbeat, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed soul meets pop tones bringing some contemporary “get up and dance” vibes to ‘Get Down’. The combination of guitars and drums lays a steady beat for the song, but the infusion of horns gives a swift kick to chilled-out Motown meets Chicago tones.

While the melody can hold its own as an outstanding and elegant arrangement, it is the female vocals that add a special something to ‘Get Down’. MBsounds explains that ‘Get Down’ is “…about a person who does not want to leave the dancefloor and feels free and alive dancing” – this concept of being free and alive is perfectly captured with the groovy, laidback vocals.

Sincere, sentimental and oozing passionate chords, ‘Get Down’ is an anthemic tribute to all those people who love the freedom of the dancefloor. Interestingly enough, while the tune has a laidback whimsy about it, it is also a bold, powerful and hard-hitting sonic statement set to have people dancing along to its beats.
