Maya Lucia – luuverboy (2021)

Merging elements of punk, indie-rock and pop, Maya Lucia is crafting a new type of rock for the 21st century. Just as musicians draw inspiration from their heritage, US-based Lucia uses the lifestyles of different towns as an influence. Splitting her time between Los Angeles and Boston, this songstress gains insight from both the west and east coasts which is easily seen in her eclectic sound. Featured on various outlets such as Oblivious Pop, Indie Shuffle and the Boston Music Awards, Lucia is slowly gaining a loyal following for her engaging music. We have the honour of introducing Maya Lucia to you with the single ‘luuverboy’.

A smooth combination of guitars, drums and keyboards, ‘luuverboy’ is a throwback to the funk-rock sounds of the 1970s. Following the obscurity of the single ‘lashing out’, ‘luuverboy’ is dreamy and groovy with a hazy ambience. Easily placed as one of those tracks in the background when chilling out on a sunset-covered beach, Maya Lucia pulls out the “chill” in your soul with her music…and this is obvious with ‘luuverboy’.

Written pre-pandemic, ‘luuverboy’ was originally a sonic representation of romantic yearning, however, this has changed. Staying true to the influence current locations, or in this case, climate, has in her music, ‘luuverboy’ has evolved into a post-pandemic anthem. Instead of longing for love, Lucia exposes the human need for normality. In a sexy, cheeky way, Lucia delicately strips away the front of coping with pandemic restrictions and lays bare our fragility as lost puppies looking for something familiar.

Enhancing the kaleidoscopic fuzziness of the song, Lucia’s bold vocals are genuine, sincere and sentimental. Reminiscent of Phoebe Bridgers, but with a deeper richness to the flowing tone, Lucia bolsters the significance of the evocative anthem. A highly sophisticated single filled with raw energy and honesty, ‘luuverboy’ is an anthem to reach the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel.
