May Roze – Heal (2022)

Influenced by the likes of Sade, Enya and Kate Bush, UK-based May Roze has a sound with an obscure originality. Intimate and intense, but with a light contemporary pop tinge, Roze can send chills down your spine while covering you in a gossamer blanket of warm tenderness. Embracing her passion for music at a young age, May Roze has been singing and performing since the age of 10. In fact, she took part in the semi-finals of the Swiss Eurovision and reached #23 in the Commercial Pop UK Charts in 2018. Featuring on Vents Magazine, Neon Music, The Playground, A&R Factory and numerous playlists, May Roze is reaching audiences across the globe. The latest addition to her discography is ‘Heal’.

Following her synth-laden singles ‘Appreciate’ and ‘When I See Your Face’, ‘Heal’ is a kaleidoscopic sonic tapestry filled merging vivid instrumentation with her soft vocals. As multi-coloured as the melodic arrangement is, Roze slides down a simplistic soundscape highlighting her versatility as an artist. The influence of Kate Bush is evident in ‘Heal’ with Roze reaching skin-chilling high notes, but with the attitude and sassiness of Sade. What I find intriguing is the balance between synthetic and organic within the pop-inspired single. Yes, there is a leaning toward the contemporary pop sounds of the 90s; however, what really stands out is the classic classiness of May Roze.

The title track from her debut EP, ‘Heal’ is an empowering and uplifting melody filled with joy. Roze shares that ‘Heal’ “reflects on the moment you decide to move on. Going from a place of heartbreak and pain to knowing your own worth and deciding what’s good for you. Like a rebirth, the day you realise you’re the one who decides how your life will go, everything starts over.” It is this need for rebirth, light and self-belief that makes the wistful single optimistic and poignant.
