Maxyme – Toxic Boy (2021)

There are a lot of songs out there about love and toxic relationships, but Maxyme is putting her own spin on things with ‘Toxic Boy’. Diving into the broken promises that litter a toxic relationship, she considers the heart wanting something that isn’t good for the person. Using a catchy melody and beautiful vocals, she draws you into the emotional contemplation of the track while urging you to get up and dance.

The single follows on from her last releases, ‘Checkmate’ and ‘Psycho’, which both saw her hitting the charts. The song is also her first collaboration with KS Records, the team behind the success of the pop duo Kingdom Street. Using catchy melodies and relatable lyrics, Maxyme is well on her way to making a serious splash in the music world and conquering the pop charts.

‘Toxic Boy’ sweep into your ears with tender synth tones that give way to a deep moving beat. The electronic tones of the melody balance light dancing vibes and deep dark beats. There is something about the music over the verses that sweeps into your chest and expands. When the chorus hits, there is an intense movement that shakes up your limbs. Through the melody, you can feel the swirl of good times and dark moments that make up toxic relationships. This swings over the danceable tones that make you want to move to their sound. It is a masterful combination of tones that wonderfully sets the tone of the single while getting you up to dance.

As the light touch of the melody takes over the opening, Maxyme’s vocals enter with the deep beat. Her voice is emotional from the first moment as she draws you into moments of a toxic relationship. Through the opening verse, she acknowledges the problems in the relationship and the twisting of emotions that the toxic boy brings up. While the lyrics lay out a vulnerable picture of someone realising the toxicity of their relationship, her performance is really catchy. The contrast between her catchy vocals and the emotions of the single is great and handled with an artistic flair. Her performance picks up the moving dance vibes of the melody for the chorus, while plucking at your emotions and insecurities.

Maxyme balances a dancing melody against the realisation of the toxicity of a relationship in the catchy and relatable ‘Toxic Boy’. The music makes you want to get up and dance while bringing the first touches of the balancing of dark and light moments in a relationship. Her vocals are emotive and highlight the insecurity people feel in relationships, while bringing the toxic moments into the light.
