Max Edwards – This Is Where I Leave You (2023)
Often compared to Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran with his warm vocals and heartfelt melodies, singer-songwriter Max Edwards can charm audiences from the outset. From his debut single ‘Can’t Go Back’ in 2020 to 2022’s ‘Malibu’ and his more recent single ‘IS WHAT IT IS’, the Canadian artist has received critical acclaim on an international scale. Not only is he reaching listeners nationally but coverage from notable blogs, radio stations and playlists have him garnering a following far beyond his North American borders.
Readily experimenting with various genres, Edwards is constantly honing his sound evolving in sophistication and eclecticism. Opening 2023 with the pop single ‘I Love You’ Edwards tapped into his inner Ed Sheeran; however, we heard a shift to something more electropop in his single ‘IS WHAT IT IS’ – a collaborative track with singer-songwriter REIDØ. In his latest release ‘This Is Where I Leave You’, we hear the bold beats of electronic pop melding with his pop meets RnB style.
Creating a comfortable foundation of sound with soft, soothing synths – sort of like a mattress to cradle your ears, Edwards calms listeners with an electropop base. Yet, while the song is mellifluous, a puncture of electronic beats adds a brash boldness to the melody. Interestingly, as these electropop sounds take you on a sonic rollercoaster ride, a harmonic charm makes you comfortable. Add Edwards’ warm vocals and you find yourself grinning at the poetic beauty of ‘This is Where I Leave You’.
Despite the elegance of ‘This Is Where I Leave You’, poignancy lurks in its playfulness. Penned in 2018 with writer and producer Jarett Holmes, ‘This Is Where I Leave You’ is filled with vulnerability and personal intimacy. Looking at the tumultuous complexity of an ending relationship, joy is mixed with an intrinsic melancholy.
“’This Is Where I Leave You’ was written back in 2018 but was never released until I finally decided it needed to be put out. This was a really fun song to write. We wanted it to be super-detailed and for it to almost paint a picture of a relationship that turned to shit.” – Max Edwards on ‘This Is Where I Leave You’
