Max Edwards – Give It All Up (2024)

For about five years, give or take, singer-songwriter Max Edwards has shared his smooth, rich music with the masses. In 2020 he hit the blogosphere with ‘Can’t Go Back’ and in 2022 ‘Malibu’ made its way through our (and several others) speakers – all to critical acclaim. Often compared to the likes of Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber, the Canadian musician brims warmth, charm and a sassy flair to get the party started.

Following his well-received singles ‘I Just Wanna’ and ‘We Could Be Lonely’, Edwards wraps listeners in a bubble of contemporary pop with ‘Give It All Up’. Yet, while a strong commercial pop leaning exists, hints of indie-pop flutter through the single with a cling of RnB sticking to its skin. Bold and confident, ‘Give It All Up’ weaves pulsating beats with soothing synths leading listeners into a hazy soundscape with cinematic airiness. While sophisticated elegance oozes from the production, a simultaneously rough innocence smiles through the kaleidoscopic sheen.

An entirely DIY project, in fact, the first song that Edwards completed “100% of the writing, producing and mixing”, he pours himself into this labour of love and it shows in the intimate music. Edwards shares that he “started creating ‘Give It All Up’ back in the summer last year. The song had a completely different vibe to it when I originally started and I never fully fell in love with it. I ended up switching up the production style which changed the whole song…”

While the melody is toe-tapping with laidback summer vibes, the poetic lyricism brings depth to ‘Give It All Up’. Attaching a strong personal flavour to the song, Edwards explains that he “…really wanted to try and make a song that explained what was going on in my life…” In a simplistic but complex way, ‘Give It All Up’ is a letter to the person he loves, as well as an intimate diary entry which he sings to us with tender, heartfelt ease. I find it intriguing how the single is filled with happiness and joy but a slip of vulnerability edges in touching the fragile side of our souls.
