Mauds Dog – Pebble Beach (2024)
The saying goes that everything happens for a reason; we may not know what the reason is, but fate has a way of making things happen – such is the case with Mauds Dog. In a serendipitous twist of fate, two veteran musicians reunited and bonded over memories of recording at Shepperton Studios in the 1980s. One musician is singer-songwriter Mark Fisher who found a niche with heavy metal band Voltz; the other is singer-songwriter Jackie Pryce who graced the stages as she danced and sang through the decade of Cabaret. In 2004, after long musical journeys, their paths collided to navigate one more melodic forest with each’s diverse skills. Come with us as we delve into their debut single, ‘Pebble Beach’.
Described as a jazz/folk duo, Mauds Dog captures the heart of old-school folk and sprinkles it with the jazzy tones of Pryce’s vocals. In ‘Pebble Beach’, the pair concoct a tender acoustic single with a charming guitar and a rich voice; however, just as there is strength in the warm folk-filled melody, a sprinkle of vulnerability oozes from Pryce’s breathy whispers.
While the melody is an elegant and simplistic folk ballad, the tune is kaleidoscopic in its barebones starkness. Soft and soothing, you can easily have the song in the background as the soundtrack to a relaxed day at the beach. The inclusion of waves lapping on the shore adds a unique tinge transporting you to the beach. Then again, the sound of waves introduces a sense of vulnerability with each ripple drawing on emotions in a fragile ebb and flow.
The song itself is enchanting with every element contributing to the masterful symphony; however, it is the theme that brings weighty depth to the tune. The duo explain that ‘Pebble Beach’ “reflects on loss and warm memories” – the ebb and flow. Sincere, sentimental and introspective, ‘Pebble Beach’ is an honest exploration of yesteryear with a big hug from an old friend.
In addition to the single, Mauds Dog released an official music video for ‘Pebble Beach’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
