Maud’s Dog – Maine To LA (2025)
Breathing life into vintage folk sounds and lacing that with profound, timeless lyricism, Maud’s Dog is a band for everyone. Appealing to fans of yesteryear with their retro tone, but speaking to generations with their emotional themes, it’s near impossible not to find some solace with Maud’s Dog, regardless of who, when, where and how you are. Last year, we were introduced to the duo with their songs ‘Pebble Beach’ and ‘Not Tonight’; however, today we are eagerly taking a headfirst dive into their new single, ‘Maine To LA’. Join us, won’t you?
Taking their first step into 2025, ‘Maine To LA’ is a swift tumble into a sonic sea of old-school folk music. As veterans of the ‘80s music scene, the retro rhythms are no surprise, but Mark Fisher and Jackie Pryce are fully aware of the new audience ready for a soulful connection. Unlike ‘Not Tonight’ and ‘Pebble Beach’, ‘Maine To LA’ is seemingly grittier while retaining the light-hearted aura of their signature style. Moreover, there is a greater oscillation between tumultuous darkness and optimistic light, enhancing the sophistication of the pair’s musicality.
One element I enjoy in Maud’s Dog’s music, and particularly ‘Maine To LA’, is the entwining of emotion, lyricism and sound almost acting as the theme song for situations, thoughts, and feelings. With ‘Maine To LA’, Pryce’s vocals drift from poignancy to empowerment with ease. Aligning with the pace, tone, and constant rise and fall of their melody, she tackles the personal narrative, reflecting on sorrow, hope, and resilience in one fell swoop.
For me, ‘Maine To LA’ is the ideal weaving of heavier, harder-hitting music matched with greater depth in the intimate tale – ideal if you’re looking for something easy to hear but also with full-bodied emotion. Quickly taking my place in their loyal following, I am eager to see (or rather hear) more from Maud’s Dog.
