Matthew S. Horner – Undisputed (2024)

“Live for the day like there is no tomorrow. Live out every dream that you can.” – words from singer-songwriter Matthew S. Horner when we interviewed him in 2023. Then again, for Horner it’s not just a motivational line – he captures the core of “living like there’s no tomorrow” in his music. Discovering a passion for music early on, he played the trumpet in middle school progressing to the guitar because his brother played it, and then the number of instruments kept rolling in. From his debut single Outta’ Time to the most recent single ‘Undisputed’, Horner is turning heads and garnering a loyal following far behind his US borders. Come with us, and everyone else who loves his music, as we delve into ‘Undisputed’.

Following his well-received tracks ‘Riot Nights’ and ‘Alibi’, Horner tips his hat at the 90s pop-rock sound with ‘Undisputed’. While Horner’s music sits alongside Weezer, Jimmy Eat World and Good Charlotte, a slip of live rawness whispers nostalgic reminiscence of South African 90s band Tweak – at least for me. A local hero in Johannesburg, Tweak fell in line with more mainstream pop-punk bands; however, the grittiness of their early gigs ooze from Horner’s ‘Undisputed’.

Recorded and co-produced in Springfield, Illinois with Nick Giaimo and mastered by Ryan Schumer, ‘Undisputed’ is sophisticated but skin-tingling in a naïve youthfulness of raw, live shows. Bringing the thrill of a live show to a studio single is not only impressive but intoxicating. I mean, who can deny the tempting vibe of a live show?

While the melody is intriguing with pounding drums, soaring guitars and a bold bass, all performed by Horner, profoundness sneaks through in the moving lyricism. Catchy and infectious, he grabs negative emotions – the type that gets you down – and chucks them to the side because, well, what has he got left to lose? Horner explains:

“This is a song called ‘Undisputed’. It’s about when life gets you down and you learn to fight back… never give up.”
