Matthew Hayes Jacobs – Born Into The Mass Mind (2025)

Earning a reputation for engaging, enthusiastic and powerful melodies interwoven with introspective, reflective lyricism, Matthew Hayes Jacobs adds sonic sophistication to raw vulnerability with an evocative flair. We came across Hayes Jacobs in December last year with the single ‘What Secrets Lie Ahead’ where his enigmatic mish-mash of genres rushed past our face and ensnared our senses. We, however, are not the only listeners being hypnotised by the US-based artist’s melodies. Reaching far beyond his US borders, Hayes Jacobs is growing a following across several continents.

Following the critically acclaimed ‘What Secrets Lie Ahead’, ‘Born Into The Mass Mind’ is Hayes Jacobs first single of 2025. Recorded and produced by Justin Tracy, the new track is a combination of pulsating drums, soaring guitars, a bold bass and the interspersed plink-plonk of piano. I find it intriguing that while ‘Born Into The Mass Mind’ is a high-paced rock-inspired melody blazing with rock ‘n’ roll vibes, the piano brings classical structure and clarity to the rambunctious song.

The instrumentation is intriguing with a simmering grunge meets alternative rock sheen; however, it is the layering of instruments and vocals that pack that punch. Almost two separate tracks, Hayes Jacobs vocals run atop the melody like a person telling a story while music flows in the background. Interestingly, this brash, abrupt, slightly frenzied execution perfectly captures the theme of cultural conditioning – a rush of instructions, ideas and opinions set to tackle your faculties and make you behave in a particular way. Hayes Jacobs explains:

“I wanted to write a song about the massive cultural conditioning in all societies. For our sanity, we need to wake up from mass mind… The lyrics are not superficial, there is a lot of depth here. Hopefully, the lyrics are clarifying to the listener and helps wake them up…”

In its own strange way, ‘Born Into The Mass Mind’ is brutal honesty tinged with significant sincerity – the soundtrack to George Orwell’s 1984. I have been waiting for new music after hearing ‘What Secrets Lie Ahead’ and highly recommend Hayes Jacobs latest single.
