Matt Saxton – The Edge Of Things (2024)

Known for his distinctive brand of indie-folk, singer-songwriter Matt Saxton reaches into our hearts with his moving music. From the bold guitar to an intriguing saxophone and poetic lyricism, each of Saxton’s songs is a baby symphony in its own right. The Other Side Reviews discovered this UK artist’s music a couple of years ago with 2021’s ‘Animal’ but we were quite late to the party as Saxton has over two decades in the industry. From his debut album Surrender To Happiness in 2005 to the 2024 single ‘Take It Or Leave It’, Saxton reaches far beyond his UK borders bringing together the sounds of different generations in a silvery thread of good music.

Following his critically acclaimed ‘Take It Or Leave It’, Saxton’s new single ‘The Edge Of Things’ brings an indie-pop upbeat-ness to his signature folk sound. Interestingly, while the track has a toe-tapping sense of optimism in its pleasant exterior, the underlying theme leans toward melancholy vulnerability. Matt Saxton explains:

“Do you ever feel your life is like an extra in someone else’s film? Is the real action somewhere else? Are you therefore on the edge of things and not front and centre? The second single from my new album is a quirky upbeat song exploring this universal feeling…”

Produced with long-time collaborator Mat Leppanen, ‘The Edge Of Things’ diverges from Saxton’s typical style with a jazz-fused saxophone taking prominence. Scintillating and smooth, the elegant horn breathes life into the track; however, the presence of piano and guitar binds the sax in a charming folksy acoustic tone. Then again, the use of an electronic guitar comes in as Saxton matches organic and synthetic elements in ‘The Edge Of Things’.

They say things are always better in hindsight, but what if the hindsight comes up to bite you with a yearning for what might have been? The theme song for FOMO – the abbreviation of “fear of missing out” – ‘The Edge Of Things’ delicately tips at the fragility of a person peering in with desperate frustration.

In addition to the single, Matt Saxton released a lyric video for ‘The Edge Of Things’. You can view the video below and/or on Saxton’s YouTube channel.
