Matt Maltese – Anytime, Anyplace, Anyhow (2025)
Around this time each year, we find ourselves faced with numerous love songs in anticipation of Valentine’s Day. Matt Maltese, however, brings a slight reprieve among the sugary-sweet songs with some witty, tragic and soul-stirring music. If you haven’t heard of Matt Maltese before now, don’t worry we’re in the same boat; however, the UK-based singer-songwriter has been sharing music for several years and established himself internationally as one of “…the UK’s finest young songwriters”. Join us as we delve into his new single, ‘Anytime, Anyplace, Anyhow’.
Following his take on the song ‘My Funny Valentine’ – performed by the iconic Frank Sinatra – Maltese enters 2025 with ‘Anytime, Anyplace, Anyhow’. For some odd reason, and I’m unsure why I think this, self-recorded and produced music seems slightly more intimate and vulnerable to me. Perhaps it’s a bit of a labour of love, the DIY nature offering a part of the artist’s soul. This is not to say using an independent producer is not as meaningful. In the case of Matt Maltese, that raw passion and vulnerable intimacy truly shine.
Sophisticated and elegant, a soothing weave of drums and guitar embraces you in a rush of music; yet, while the melody is smooth, tranquil and calm, the lyricism adds a contrary weightiness. With his signature wit and insight, Maltese explores the enigmatic, magnetic quality people hold over us even though we don’t want this connection. He explains:
“I think there are those people for all of us that occupy a certain incomprehensible place in our brain… a place we don’t quite have control over. People that have affected you so deeply you almost live with them still, remembering and imagining them against your will… This song speaks to that, and to the physical (sorry) side of it too.”
Languid and gentle with sincerity oozing from each note, Maltese captures complex emotions in a luxurious few minutes of music. He already won my heart with his unique twist of ‘My Funny Valentine’, and I’m eager to hear more from the superb Matt Maltese.
