Matt DeAngelis – Speak For A Moment (2023)
From his single ‘Real Future’ to ‘Change Your Ways’ and 2023’s ‘Can’t Write About Today’, US-based musician Matt DeAngelis explores the chaotic past, anguished present and finding that “wake-up call” to reality in a mire of anxiety, fear, understanding and unity. In his most recent song ‘Speak For A Moment’, DeAngelis once again takes a look at a world riddled with strife and negativity but touches on the future from the present and how to make a more positive impact on what is to come. Some might consider DeAngelis a musical philosopher, but the message is simple: let’s turn a negative into a positive in a “time-sensitive world”.
Picking up the pace to a toe-tapping rock-inspired single, ‘Speak For A Moment’ shifts from the slower melancholic tone of ‘Can’t Write About Today’. For some odd reason, DeAngelis reminds me of 80s Elton John with obscure vocals and intimate piano flying through the melody. Yet, while the 80s pop tone can be heard, it is a mere sliver in the rock-inspired tapestry that is ‘Speak For A Moment’.
As DeAngelis is a storm chaser, let’s compare ‘Speak For A Moment’ to a massive sonic hurricane. Kaleidoscopic in nature, Dan Pettolina’s pounding drum sparks from steady to pounding. Eric Bishop’s bass weaves with its intriguing tone. Bill Kennedy’s guitars burst throughout as a jolt here and push there. The piano and percussion fill the swirls with bright silvery shocks, and the vocals carry you in a soft hug but also a fierce cradle. Produced by Tom Conran, John DeAngelis and guitarist Bill Kennedy at Gradwell House Studios and Musically Speaking Studios, ‘Speak For A Moment’ is an exquisitely textured track with a harmonic unity in the overall arrangement.
An advocate for climate change and mental health (DeAngelis having been diagnosed with OCD in his youth), this talented singer-songwriter explores humanity in its chaotic state to spread awareness of “the changing climate that has become a serious issue in the preservation of our planet.” ‘Speak For The Moment’ is a sonic representation of DeAngelis’ determination to face the present, identify the problems, find a solution and connect with others to change the future.
