Matreya – Eagles (2025)

From the X Factor rebel to the reflective Matreya, the UK-based singer-songwriter returns with a diverse, profound and intriguing brand of music. Potentially still a bit rebellious in his eclectic weaving of “…pop, soul and Afro-world influences”, Matreya’s new project is an uplifting exploration of life, love, self-discovery, and everything in between. In an interview with Head Above The Clouds, Matreya shared that his new project is “…all the different facets of me and reflects my soul rather than just my personality…” Today, we take a look at the debut single, ‘Eagles’; join us, won’t you?

Marking the beginning of a pivotal new chapter, ‘Eagles’ is brutally honest and profound, but the soothing soulful vocals bring lightness to the track. Moreover, ‘Eagles’ is not only our first glimpse of the reflective Matreya but is a peek into his upcoming album, Anchor – an album exploring themes of “…love, loss and renewal…”

As an entirely new find – in other words, I had no idea who Matreya is or was – I had no expectations and was unsure what lay ahead. Co-produced with Iwan VanHetten and Reece Hayden, ‘Eagles’ is a slick, nostalgic brand of 90s RnB and soul. Interestingly, while leaning toward the days of Boys II Men and Brian McKnight (by no means a complete comparison), there is a contemporary edginess clinging to the song. Include slips of Afrobeat peeking from the background, and you have a rather intriguing four minutes of music.

While the track is exciting from a style perspective, it is Matreya’s vocals that up the ante so to speak. A glorious presentation of his vast vocal range, it’s fascinating to hear the rise and fall from tenor to alto – at least, that’s what I’m getting. Moreover, the soulfulness oozing from each word holds your heart in a tender embrace. Matreya explains:

“’Eagles’ is a reflection of everything I’ve been through… and the lessons I’ve learned about trusting your path and embracing transformation. It’s about finding one’s courage and inner strength through life’s challenges…”

In addition to the single, Matreya released an official lyric video for ‘Eagles’. You can view the video below and/or on his YouTube channel.
