Matney – All Fired Up (2024)
Already an established figure in the American underground scene, Michael Matney is already a force to be reckoned with. Alongside the fact that he performed as guitarist for David Alan Coe, his previous band, White Boy and The Average Rat Band, gained cult-like status throughout the post-punk and metal scene. In fact, original pressed albums go for more than $1000 each and are treasured record collector items. Today, we take a look at Michael Matney’s most recent project, Matney. Come with us as we delve into their discography.
Entering the Southern Rock genre with great aplomb, Matney is a US-based quartet ready to rock your socks off. Bringing his iconic charisma and intoxicating rocker charm, the group’s debut single ‘All Fired Up’ has the force of ZZ Top with the power of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Breathing life into old-school classic rock, pounding drums match scorching guitars hitting you in the chest with high voltage energy. For me, the crescendo into a fiery guitar solo layered atop hard-hitting drums and a steady bass really captures the 60s/70s rock bands.
Recorded and produced by award-winning producer Stevie Salas, who also added the phenomenon lead guitar in the single, ‘All Fired Up’ captures hearts and twirls you about in a haze of kaleidoscopic music. The thing is, just as the instrumentation offers bright lights flashing before your eyes, it is Michael Matney’s gruff vocals that up the ante. A slightly darker shade of grittiness, he leans in prompting feelings of vulnerability. Moreover, Michael Matney’s vocals offer an aggressive forcefulness belied by soothing tenderness.
The melody is one to ensnare your senses; however, ‘All Fired Up’ has depth to the lyricism. Co-written with Stevie Salas, ‘All Fired Up’ captures the trials, tribulations and personal experiences of Matney’s life.
“The single is as influenced by Matney’s musical heroes as it is his farm life, faith and the demons of his past. Having overcome immense personal struggles, Michael was brought back to the straight and narrow through music and his faith. He hopes to connect with those struggling through similar battles to show them that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.”
In addition to the single, Matney released an official music video for ‘All Fired Up’. You can view the video below or via their YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
