Massimo De Simone – La canzone dei pianeti (2023)
Constantly transcending the realm of art, science and fantasy with musical alchemy, singer-songwriter Massimo De Simone intoxicates, hypnotises and ensnares listeners with his intriguing style. Hailing from Rome, the Italian artist does just that: creates art. With lilts of synth-driven dream-pop to folk-inspired pop-rock, De Simone is anything but pedestrian. From his debut single ‘Laila’ in 2021 to 2023’s ‘Danza Aliena’, he has (and still is) turned heads across the globe. This is my introduction to De Simone, so join me on my journey into his musical world.
Following the well-received single ‘Danza Aliena’, De Simone adopts a soft pop sound in the new track ‘La canzone dei pianeti’. Aptly translated to English as “the song of the planets”, ‘La canzone dei pianeti’ is a mystical skip, jump and hop between the vast expanse of space – sonic, of course. With delicate vocals, De Simone creates a velvety span of stars with the Milky Way shining brightly in the charming guitars and orchestral accompaniment. Soft, soothing and caressing, his dulcet tones bring a bright light to your life whipping you between each planet with ease.
Yes, the song might allow me to think of a star-studded traipsing across the universe but there is a deeper profoundness that makes ‘La canzone dei pianeti’ even more moving. Penned as a romantic ballad of orchestral pop, the single tells the tale of love between a father and his son. It captures the tender passion of their paths as they “travel in parallel without ever distancing themselves too much. The most beautiful journey that the two will make together is the one in fantasy, between planets and imaginary worlds” all encased in the sweet melody leading to dreams and fantasies.
As I mentioned, this is my introduction to Massimo De Simone and based on his previous work I was unsure what to expect. The synth-driven dream-pop ‘Danza Aliena’ had me expecting another modern pop single; however, De Simone showcases his versatility, innovation and eclecticism as he switches to a stronger pop vibe. Softening my soul and sending shivers down my spine, ‘La canzone dei pianeti’ is a tune I will not forget any time soon. Highly recommended!
