Masha and the Fam – When The World Disappears (2024)

Brimming with eccentricity, eclecticism and obscure innovativeness that pushes the boundaries of societal conventionalism, US-based group Masha and the Fam are anything but pedestrian. A collective of like-minded musicians, the group is eager to explore life in its entirety creating soundscapes to illuminate the beauty and pain of the human spirit; and, my word, what a platform they have created. Described by Record World International as a “cinematic opus”, Masha and the Fam transcend the everyday hum-drum-ness winning a following with their electric performances, enchanting tunes, and generally astounding presence. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘When The World Disappears’.

Following their successful tour performing at the SXSW music festival, Masha and the Fam immediately hit the studio to create ‘When The World Disappears’. Self-produced and co-penned by Kyle Dombroski, Marissa Balovlenkov-Smith and Servio Maldanado, the female-fronted group delves into a mystic realm of soul, blues, classic rock, alternative rock fluttered with hints of funk. For me, it is not merely the expanse of genres but how the melody uses each to explore the complexity of human emotion.

Simplistic with its piano-driven tone, you feel lulled into a tender swoon capturing a sense of comfort; however, the soothing line falls back to a rambunctious tone offering vulnerability, fragility and inner turmoil. Yet, as this oscillation between frenzied and smooth continues, the group exude a strong sense of inner peace and empowerment as one reaches contentment. Then again, it is said that contentment is only felt when comfortable with your own presence, but are we ever alone? I mean, truly alone without any connection to others. Masha and the Fam explain:

“’When The World Disappears’ poetically captures the realisation that we are never truly alone, highlighting the strength and power derived from the unseen threads that connect us with every being on the planet…”
