Mary Knoblock – Excuse Me While I Go Fall In Love (2024)

Known for her eclectic, eccentric, experimental music, singer-songwriter Mary Knoblock is anything but pedestrian. Creating a concoction of alternative musical styles, Knoblock has been deemed a sonic alchemist embracing avant-garde sensibilities taking listeners to “a space where the boundaries of sound are blurred…” We came across Knoblock last year with her unusual dream-pop single ‘Heaven’s Bride’, and since then she continues to astound us with each release. Come with us as we drift into her latest world of imagination in ‘Excuse Me While I Go Fall In Love’.

Following the well-received single ‘The Wonderfall Haloarchy’, US-based Knoblock continues a journey through ethereal landscapes, but highlights her constant evolution in a somewhat weightier lilt of alternative pop in ‘Excuse Me While I Go Fall In Love’. Self-recorded, composed and produced, the new track uses a rhythmic flush of synth-drive beats to wrap listeners in a shimmering blanket of sound. Then again, as you become comfortable, the flush of strings brings haunting chills to the melody.

A breath of obscure sound, Knoblock easily has you lost in the musical swirls; yet, as I mentioned there is a weightier depth to ‘Excuse Me While I Go Fall In Love’. Slicing through the mist are bolder, deeper, heavier beats strangely enhancing the profoundness of the track. An interspersed hit of upbeat synths adds an electronic edginess. For me, however, it is Knoblock’s vocals that highlight the song’s duality and oscillation from dark to light.

Chilling, eerie and slightly discomforting, Knoblock’s siren song draws you in with wide-eyed intoxication. As haunting as the vocals are, there is an enigmatic charm about Knoblock so it’s uncomfortable but alluring. Confident and boastful but also fragile and vulnerable, ‘Excuse Me While I Go Fall In Love’ is an immersive travelling through an insatiably inimitable whirlpool of sound.

A glimpse into her upcoming album, scheduled for release in 2025, Mary Knoblock connects to listeners with intense intimacy through her melodies. ‘Excuse Me While I Go Fall In Love’ is another intimate journey to enjoy.
