Martom – LSD Chimpanzee (2020)

History can provide lessons for our present, but it also offers a wealth of inspiration for musicians. Martom is drawing on the past for their debut single ‘LSD Chimpanzee’. Looking to the 1970s when a group of scientists gave acid to a chimpanzee to see the effect it had on interactions in the wild, the band has created an irresistibly groovy single.

The body moving flow comes from Martin Atencio (drums), Chris Modderno (bass) and Tomas Somera II (vocals, guitar). The group first met in high school and have played in various iterations of the band over the years. It was only earlier this year when the band solidified and their debut single was realised.

‘LSD Chimpanzee’ draws you in with an engaging guitar line. This sets a great indie-rock flow to the melody that gets you swaying to the band’s beat. There is an interesting movement to the melody that builds in a stop-start way to hook you to the band’s sound. This gives to a more melodic flow later in the track that has you floating to the groovy movement of the instruments. The interesting melody enhances the vocals and adds a little edge to the lyrics and topic of the song.

Somera’s vocals continue the dynamic movement of the melody through the rise and fall of his performance. While the melody grabs your attention, his vocals are an irresistible pull into the story of the track. The lyrics are as engaging as the rest of the song as they consider connections and brain chemistry. There is something very groovy about his vocals that get your shoulders moving to the music.

Martom is setting the bar high with their irresistibly groovy debut single ‘LSD Chimpanzee’. The melody has you grooving to the band’s flow while the vocals pull you into a tale of connections and chemistry. The easy single makes you excited for what the band has to offer going forward.
