Mark Houston – Deserve You (2021)
Bringing together elements of alternative rock and folk with mild pop undertones, Mark Houston shares tales of love, life and everything else with his unique sound. While Houston only began releasing music this year, he has already grabbed the attention of audiences across the globe. Featured in notable blogs like FV Music Blog and Indie Music Center, as well as several online radio stations/podcasts, Houston will soon be on everyone’s tongue. The latest addition to his critically acclaimed discography is the single ‘Deserve You’.
Following his folk-influenced single ‘The Way It Goes’ (read our review here), Houston and his crew adopt a slower, steadier, more rock-influenced style in ‘Deserve You’. Along with Sooyoun Park (vocals and violin) and Luke Westermeyer (drums and percussion), the US-based multi-instrumentalist explores the concept of self-destruction. What I find intriguing is how the melodic combination of violins, guitars, drums and percussion promote a feeling of vulnerability in the haunting soundscape; however, it is the vocals that intensify the emotion.
Described by Houston as “a fictional tale about someone who damages others due to feeling unworthy of love”, ‘Deserve You’ is not only vulnerable but delicately cuts to the core of self-doubt – something many people feel nowadays. The eloquent execution of the poetic lyricism shows sophistication and maturity as artists, but it also pokes at a raw innocence within the listener. Teetering on the cusp of whimsical haziness and brutal poignancy, ‘Deserve You’ is the sentimental representation of the human spirit.
Recorded by Jimmy Hill at Amplified Wax Recording Studio, ‘Deserve You’ is the fourth single from Mark Houston’s upcoming debut album The Coast. If this is anything to go by, I can’t wait until the full album is available.
