Marina – Vindictive Bitch (2023)
Inspired by the complexities and intensity of human relationships, singer-songwriter Marina captures its intricacies in evocative melodies. We first came across Marina with her 2021 single ‘Almost Love’, and we weren’t the only ones who had their heads turned. Since her 2021 single ‘Sunsets And Rieslings’, the US-based artist has reached far beyond her US borders with a reputation for engaging, energetic and intriguing music. With only four original radio singles under her belt, she might be considered a newbie, but this newbie has the sophistication to take on the most established musicians.
The first single of 2023, Marina follows 2022’s well-received ‘Why’ with her new single ‘Vindictive Bitch’. Inspired by Katy Perry and Kelly Clarkson, Marina’s melodies have a strong contemporary pop vibe; however, there is a more sinister quality lurking in these songs. ‘Why’ had a raw brashness to it leaning toward an Amanda Palmer insanity in the rollercoaster of sound. In ‘Vindictive Bitch’, Marina appears to have mellowed with a toe-tapping Katy Perry joviality in the verses… then it goes crazy.
Penned as a response to a broken relationship the melody swings from the euphoric bliss of a romance to the shocking removal of those rose-tinted glasses. Bold beats flit alongside a charming pop melody like a shimmering blanket only to be torn apart by an Alanis Morrissette anger in the chorus. Like ripping a band-aid off a wound, the toxicity of a bitter relationship oozes from the open cut. Marina explains:
“’Vindictive Bitch’ is about being in a narcissistic relationship, getting revenge and standing up for yourself. It’s meant to be a celebration of calling the narcissist out on their bad behaviour, embracing it when they call you crazy, and not being afraid of showing the world that now you’re thriving… I like to create my own karma and what can I say? Sometimes she’s a vindictive bitch.”
Despite being a tumultuous flair of organised chaos, Marina’s ‘Vindictive Bitch’ has a heartfelt sincerity with a biting bind of empowerment.
