Marina Bennett – Wandering Naked (2023)

Described as “epic”, “amazing”, and “captivating” by notable music blogs across the globe, singer-songwriter Marina Bennett is turning heads, creating waves and meeting people with smiles far beyond her Canadian borders. Raised in a musical family, Bennett was surrounded by music from the get-go. She took to composing and writing songs with a vivacious attitude and is known for expressing personal stories on a sonic canvas.

While Canada-based Marina Bennett has about nine solo singles to her name, at least according to Spotify, she is no stranger to the music world. Writing with and for various artists worldwide in various genres, the songwriting credits include Amazon Studios, Netflix, USA Television, Freeform, Freevee and many more. She has also reached the semi-finals in the International Songwriting Competition in 2021 and 2022 competing with international independent music professionals. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Wandering Naked’.

Following her well-received single ‘Let Me Go’ – the song that earned her semi-finalist at the 2022 International Songwriting Competition – Bennett adopts a more upbeat tone in ‘Wandering Naked’. Unlike the cinematic ballad ‘Let Me Go’, there is a darker pulse oozing from ‘Wandering Naked’. Recorded alongside producer Julien Renvoise and Nicholas Di Lorenzo (mastering), the single finds the line between commercial pop and jazz then blurs it with a cinematic texture and haunted ambience. Marina Bennett explains that ‘Wandering Naked’ is “a very vulnerable and personal song that was written during a time in my life where I was very lost seeking love outside of myself… it explores a multitude of emotions and experiences that all reflect vulnerability” and this is perfectly captured in the melody.

Bold beats pulsate in the background like a pounding heart or the throb you feel in your head and chest when faced with a terrifying situation. Slivers of synths flow across the beat pulling you into a warm embrace; however, the haunting quality of Bennett’s vocals sends shivers down your spine and tingles your skin. The repetition of the lyric, “You’ve got me wandering naked”, reiterates the fragility of her vulnerable self wistfully swimming through a twirl of rejection, anxiety and inner conflict.

While a dark heaviness exudes from ‘Wandering Naked’ clasping at your every breath, Bennett appears to hold you navigating the poignant mire with an elegant albeit raw charm. ‘Wandering Naked’ is my introduction to Marina Bennett and I cannot wait for her debut album, set for release in 2024.
