Marigold Ingot – Dial Tone (2021)

With a strong background in performing arts, including classical dance and acting, singer-songwriter Marigold Ingot brings a breath of fresh air into a stagnating commercial pop scene. A fan of experiencing new cultures, Ingot has lived, worked and studied on three continents, continues to travel and brings all of the diverse lifestyles into her tender tracks. Only one year in the making, the talented artist has already built a strong following and it seems she isn’t looking to stop the momentum any time soon. The latest addition to her well-received repertoire is ‘Dial Tone’.

Reminiscent of Lorde, Florence Welch and Adele, Marigold Ingot has a powerful, intimate and bold style. A fan of Adele’s “heartbreak anthems”, she can easily bring you to your knees with her rich vocals; however, it is the combination of these vocals with delicate instrumentation that makes her melodic arrangements beautiful. Following her single ‘Whiskey and Wine’ (read our review here), Ingot adopts a breath-taking pop meets jazz sound in ‘Dial Tone’. Yet, while she executes a hard-hitting pop anthem with ‘Dial Tone’, it shows her versatility as she transitions from the country meets jazz-influenced sound in ‘Whiskey and Wine’.

Using personal narratives, Ingot connects with her audience on a deeper level exploring life with all the good and bad. ‘Whiskey and Wine’ took an empowering stance unleashing the joy of being yourself; however, ‘Dial Tone’ steps back to look at the more melancholic side of things. Touching on toxic relationships, breakups, isolation, anxiety and desperation, the track reviews unhealthy affairs and the exhausting aftermath. Interestingly enough, while the song has a sense of sad poignancy, Ingot adds a silver lining into the sonic tapestry purporting that there is a new beginning after every end. Refreshing and hopeful, to be sure.

Anthemic, sensitive and sincere, ‘Dial Tone’ is another reason why Marigold Ingot is not to be pigeon-holed. I cannot wait to see what she has in store for 2022.
