Mara Liddle – girl of your dreams (2024)

The voice of the TikTok generation, singer-songwriter Mara Liddle is one of a bubble of sugary-pink pop wrapped in a quart of kaleidoscopic lights and covered with a sweet grin and sparkling eyes. Yet, while she appears sweet and fun, a poignant profoundness examines existential issues with dark intricacy. Hailing from the UK, Newcastle under Lyme-based Liddle might have blasted onto the scene last year, but she is already receiving critical acclaim across the globe. Her debut EP STALEMATE is described as dazzling, visionary and filled with fresh pop. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘girl of your dreams’.

Known for her energetic melodies, enthusiastic performances and intoxicating style, Liddle is a cross between Charlie XCX, Shygirl and Pinkpantheress but with a unique twist. Elegantly navigating the route to adulthood in a world veiled by the Internet, Liddle’s STALEMATE took us on a personal journey through life – at least the earlier part of it. ‘girl of your dreams’ continues her introspection stepping into the realm of relationships; or at least that of lust. Living life online is dangerous and, as with celebrities or just a person you think you’d like to know, the “jigsaw pieces” compromise reality. Liddle explains:

“I’d heard through a friend that a guy who I only knew in passing fancied me. It freaked me out. All that he knew about me was what he’d seen in the corridors at work or on my Instagram page – was that enough? Had he created a fantasy version of me in his head by forcing a handful of jigsaw pieces together to make an image?”

Brimming with electronic beats and smooth synths, ‘girl of your dreams’ is easily placed alongside artists like Charlie XCX and Sophie. Airy electropop swarms about with a heavy rush of synths, but a sense of suffocation lingers just as the song is soothing. Liddle’s laidback, cheery, chilled vocals are innocent; however, a slight waiver of vulnerability and fear tinges her voice with eeriness and doubt. Easy on the ears, ‘girl of your dreams’ is similar to stepping into a hazy dream… the other side is the nightmare of strangers getting too close and losing yourself in the swoosh of pop.
