Manu Chevalier (ft. Michael Washington) – I belong to you (2023)

From jazz and reggae to soul, blues and pop, singer-songwriter Manu Chevalier is a melting pot of musical styles. As an experienced live saxophonist, he captures hearts with his smouldering sax (c’mon admit, all saxophones are smouldering); however, his penchant for enchanting music reaches way beyond the stage. Mentored by award-winning industry professionals, such as Shelly Poole (Alisha’s Attic), Morris Pleasure (Earth, Wind and Fire, Michael Jackson), Jeff Franzel (N’Sync, Taylor Dayne), and Paul Statham (Kylie Minogue, Dido), Chevalier has gained knowledge to surpass many emerging recording artists. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘I belong to you’.

Similar to his 2022 debut single ‘Get On The Dance Floor’, ‘I belong to you’ brings the smoothness of 70s funk to the fore with a strong Earth, Wind and Fire vibe. While there is a nostalgic flair of retro funk, Chevalier’s new single will feel comfortable on any contemporary dancefloor. For me, Michael Washington’s vocals are reminiscent of the iconic Michael Jackson with a slick pop sound slivering through the melody as bold beats shimmer beneath in a kaleidoscopic haze of keys and drums.

A toe-tapping, hip-swaying, head-nodding song, ‘I belong to you’ is laidback but also rambunctious in a mellifluous way. While Washington’s rich tones lift my heart, it is Chevalier’s saxophone that binds everything together. Breaking through the smooth melody, the saxophone solo smoulders in a sassy but cheerful way.

So, overall, what do I think of ‘I belong to you’? It’s a big grin with a cheeky wink leaving you lost in a giddy bubble of joy.
