Malina Claire – Window (2020)

Loneliness is an emotion that many people have felt this year. Through her emotional and cinematic single, ‘Window’, Malina Claire is looking at loneliness and the other emotions it invokes. Using the moment in a relationship when you realise it is over, the single works through her thoughts and the longing for a connection that has been lost.

While centred around the idea of loneliness, the single delves much deeper. Taking a step back from traditional song structures, Claire conveys the message and emotions of the single through a dynamic production. If the music itself does not transport you to the sea of emotions she creates, the accompanying music video will.

‘Window’ draws you in with a gentle piano line setting an almost melancholic tone. The soft melodic opening sets the emotional tone of the track as it is draped in sadness and loneliness. The relatively simple melody gets a shimmering edge that makes you think of afternoon sun lazily filtering through the window. As the melody shimmers, the piano line builds up adding more emotional depth to the music. This build-up increases the cinematic feeling of the music as it is moulded around a more folky melodic structure.

Claire’s vocals float over the melody adding another emotional layer to the single. She is able to perfectly paint the picture of her thoughts as she works through the longing for a connection that is fading away. The harmonisations that build from the depths and swell beneath the melody are haunting yet gentle. The atmospheric flow of her vocals swirls around you as she lightly touches your skin with the loneliness that is the core of the single.

The single’s music video sees Claire sitting before a white wall. Projected onto her and the wall are images that capture the emotions of the single. There are people starting out windows, flowers blooming, birds looking into the distance and dancing figurines. It is an interesting music video that not only captures the feelings of the song but the unconventional structure as well.

Malina Claire uses a dynamic yet haunting melodic flow to work through loneliness and a longing for connections in ‘Window’. The single is draped in melancholy and a sense of lethargy while her vocals work through thoughts and emotions. The accompanying music video captures the heart and soul of the music as well as the unconventional structure of the music.
