Malena Boccadoro – Galaxies (2023)

Combine the talents of Billie Eilish and Shawn Mendes, and you might find an artist like Malena Boccadoro. With a sultry obscurity, the US-based singer-songwriter intoxicates listeners from the first chord of any of her songs. A contemporary pop musician with a nostalgic flit back to the 90s, Boccadoro brings a modern-day edginess to traditional pop sounds. This is my introduction to the songstress, but she has been reaching audiences since 2020 with her debut track ‘Novocaine’. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Galaxies’.

Following her single ‘Bubbles’, ‘Galaxies’ is Boccadoro’s first release in two years. Unlike her 2021 songs ‘Bubbles’ and ‘Fading Out’ where she favoured an upbeat electropop sound, ‘Galaxies’ has a calmer, soothing and more sophisticated sound. Synth-driven, the song has an ethereal ambient vibe illustrating her evolution in music.

Tossing you into a hazy wistfulness, ‘Galaxies’ is mellifluous with a sprinkling of kaleidoscopic whimsy. Interestingly enough, the soothing tone and gentle flow are tinged with an electropop beat adding that extra kick to the track.

Just as the melody can hold its own as an obscure, eclectic pop tune, Boccadoro demonstrates depth and profoundness exceeding the dreaminess of the song. Presenting vulnerability and fragility, ‘Galaxies’ touches on personal loss and its tragic emotions. Yet, while a delicate frailty exists in the single, it also has a sentimental sense of optimism and empowerment. Instead of viewing the sadder side of loss exclusively, Boccadoro conveys coping with loss through acceptance and healing.

“The song is dedicated to my deceased grandfather, so I just hope it makes him proud. This song is my favourite that I’ve written…it’s just my personal favourite. Songs are magic in the way where they can mean a million different things to a million different people…” – Malena Boccadoro on ‘Galaxies’
