Makeup – Pretty Boys And Broken Hearts (2020)

Once upon a time, there was a young man from England with beautiful, long dark eyelashes. Matt S. Davies (for that is his name) was never a fan of his eyelashes because it looked as if he was constantly wearing mascara. Eventually, this young man decided to turn his insecurity to his advantage; hence, the brand for Makeup was born.

Alright, so what is Makeup? In this instance, Makeup is the solo project of alternative rock singer/songwriter Matt S. Davies. Influenced by a plethora of artists ranging from Queen to Nina Simone and Eminem, Davies is creating his own genre-defying sound. The latest addition to his portfolio is ‘Pretty Boys And Broken Hearts’.

The third single of 2020, ‘Pretty Boys And Broken Hearts’ is a tongue-in-cheek take on relationships in the 21st century. Based on the experience of meeting a girl on Tinder only to be disappointed by her indifference, the track is relatable, relevant and genuine. I don’t quite understand the fascination with Tinder, but Davies’ emotive voice exposes a raw vulnerability that I can comprehend.

Vocally, I find Makeup decisively reminiscent of Freddie Mercury. His ability to traverse several octaves effortlessly can be seen in most of his songs, but ‘Pretty Boys And Broken Hearts’ is particularly evident of this skill. Melding a simple guitar-driven melody with an impressive vocal performance makes Makeup’s music unique, heartwarming and distinctive.

Charming, compelling and charismatic, it’s difficult to believe Makeup has only release a few songs to date. All in all, I would be happy to listen to ‘Pretty Boys And Broken Hearts’ repeatedly. Could I get a flutter of those lashes though; they really are beautiful.
