Major Kami – Skandal (2022)

Approximately two weeks ago (give or take), France-based artist Major Kami graced our virtual pages with a review of his single ‘IYOAB’. A bit of an oddity among the submissions we receive, it was intriguing to type something up about him. Now, I am pleased to share more of Major Kami’s eclecticism with all our wonderful readers – that’s you! As part of the 30-piece collective DAMde8, Major Kami is exposed to diverse cultures and experiences from artists across the globe including an appearance by Sarah Jay from Massive Attack. Today we are looking at Major Kami’s solo project and the song ‘Skandal’.

The title track from Major Kami’s debut EP, ‘Skandal’ stands out among his previous singles ‘IYOAB’ and ‘Burns In The Barn’. Unlike ‘Burns In The Barn’, ‘Skandal’ is less upbeat removing a hyped-up “in your face” approach; yet, there is still that “in your face” vibe in a less brash manner. Bold and hard-hitting, ‘Skandal’ seems to offer a contradiction in the emotions it evokes. It appears abrupt and sharp but with a flowing darkness woven into the melody. Razor-edged vocals swirl about with a heart-pounding scream of freedom giving you that discomforting but overwhelmingly joyful sensation.

As with ‘IYOAB’, Major Kami focuses on the concepts of freedom and open-mindedness. Interestingly enough, ‘Skandal’ explores both the joy of freedom and the grittiness of societal diversity. It “is about difference, about looking at the misfits…scandalous/androgynous/artist free of our appearances, the song also celebrates those of us who don’t quite fit in. The questions asked are who will be the children of tomorrow? How will they accept themselves, find their ways of functioning, dare to be what they want to be?”

Exposing the fragility and vulnerability of humans in a breath-taking way, Major Kami leads you to another existential plain with the song ‘Skandal’.
