Major Kami – IYOAB (2022)

Looking at diverse cultures and how they can be used to create unique music, the France-based collective DAMde8 draws together the talents of international artists and musicians – 30 people, give or take. One of these collaborative individuals is the eclectic artist Major Kami. Featured on notable publications like Loudhacker, Thoughts Words Actions, Less Than 1000 Followers and Music For All, as well as radio stations like Last.fm, Major Kami is reaching audiences on a global scale.

Following the well-received single ‘A Better Future’, Major Kami ends 2022 with the six-track EP Skandal – three separate tracks with instrumental and non-instrumental versions. One of the tracks from Skandal, which we are looking at today is the song ‘IYOAB’.

Influenced by musicians like David Bowie, Major Kami presents a strong 80s synth-pop meets glam-rock sound in ‘IYOAB’. The nostalgic flair brings us a tinge of Bowie in his heyday, but there is a contemporary electropop style that adds a modern-day edginess to the track.

The synth-driven single easily tosses you into a kaleidoscopic sonic whirlpool with bright colours flitting before your eyes. Interestingly enough, while the whirlpool heads off at full pelt, the transition in pace from upbeat to smooth and slow enhances the innovation of Major Kami.  I find this intriguing as Major Kami explains that ‘IYOAB’ touches on the concepts of “open-mindedness and freedom to move…” – something elegantly expressed in the wistful, whimsical and free melody.

As with ‘Skandal’ (the first track on Skandal), ‘IYOAB’ has a synth-led sound albeit more upbeat and hard-hitting- Yet Major Kami’s ‘Burns In The Barns’ brings a rock edge to the EP which is not heard in the electropop song ‘IYOAB’. True versatility and innovation as an artist.
