Maisyn – Naked (2023)

Described as “vulnerable and empowering…” (Unxigned), “…incredibly authentic” (A One Two Three Four), and “…isn’t afraid to be honest and open” (Heart Eyes Magazine), singer-songwriter Maisyn has a vulnerable twist to her genuine melodies. Originally releasing music as Jessie Mason, Maisyn is a brand-new burst of sonic energy for this US-based artist. From her well-received debut single ‘Cool Girl’ to the six-track EP of the same name, 2021 was an amazing year for Maisyn. Now she hits our stereos again with her latest release ‘Naked’.

Following a two-year hiatus as Maisyn, this charming musician re-emerges with an upbeat, fun and uplifting pop tune. Recorded with Grammy-nominated producer Joey Messina-Doerning, ‘Naked’ jumps out with electropop glee leaning toward artists like Miley Cyrus; however, a delicate waft of indie-pop slithers through the synth-driven melody piercing the track with smooth guitars beneath the pounding beats. It seems to find a balance between in-your-face bubble-gum pink pop and a more sophisticated, elegant and mellifluous vibe.

Just as the melody is intriguing with a hyped-up rush of music making you twirl about in a hazy mist, there is profoundness lying in the poetic lyricism. Using an introspective narrative, Maisyn explores the highs and lows of being in love. Intimate, fearful, sensitive and fragile, the bouncing tune juxtaposes the sentimental words. Yet, while human fragility is explored, a sense of optimism oozes through the song giving us hope while recognising our vulnerability.

“I wrote this after a first date that for once didn’t make me feel like crawling out of my skin. I was completely present and open, and I think I forgot that I was capable of feeling that way. More than anything this song is about vulnerability and how exciting it is when you feel safe enough to let your guard down.” – Maisyn on ‘Naked’
