Maida Rose – Where Do We Go (2021)

Despite having only two tracks to their name, duo Maida Rose is making a splash on the dream-pop music scene. Hailing from The Hauge, that’s in The Netherlands to be exact, Roos Meijer and Javièr den Leeuw are slowly growing a following on a global scale. From the UK’s Turtle Tempo to Belgium’s Dasende Beren, the Dutch duo are proving to be the dreamiest of dream-pop artists. The latest addition to their discography is ‘Where Do We Go’.

Following on from their well-received debut single ‘Harmony of Heartache’, ‘Where Do We Go’ is a heartwarming merging of soothing guitars, steady drums and delicate vocals. Smooth and flowing, but with an ethereal vibe, the track has a hazy ambience suspending you mid-air in a swirl of melancholic mist. Yes, the melody has a languid style; however, the incorporation of catchy guitar riffs introduces a classic rock influence. What I particularly enjoy about the tune from a melodic perspective is the transition from wistful pop to a rock-influenced ending void of any fuzziness.

While the melody does show innovativeness and depth, poetic lyricism enhances the dreamy soundscape. Using a stream-of-consciousness narrative, the dulcet vocals showcase the poignancy of the content. Harmonically cascading melancholic vocals with a desperate melody, ‘Where Do We Go’ sucks you into a whirlpool of evocative music. Moreover, the lingering haunting sensation leaves you gasping for breath when the song ends…then hitting the repeat button.

“The song takes place at the end of a long-term relationship where the realisation starts to sink in that you need to rediscover who you are when not being with your partner anymore. It’s a phase of denial after unsuccessful attempts to let your lover go.” – Maida Rose on ‘Where Do We Go’
