Maggie Cassidy – Leaking Love (2018)

In one of my previous reviews, I noted that different countries have distinct musical sounds.  A person can differentiate US bands from UK bands because of the ’rounded’ American sound.  May I withdraw that statement, at least a little?  I wrote it before listening to Maggie Cassidy.  I wrote it before Maggie Cassidy was a part of my life.

If Fall Out Boy and The Maine were to have a lovechild, it would be Maggie Cassidy.  The pop rock quintet hailing from the UK – Surrey, to be specific – only recently entered the music world, but has already gained a steady following.  Their latest track, ‘Leaking Love’, is evidence of their well-structured melodies, heartfelt lyrics and pure enthusiasm for music.

‘Leaking Love’ is a true representation of the band, in a way.  It is about living and loving in today’s society while dealing with depression.  Now, we’re not saying that any of the guys in the band experience depression; the relevance is that Maggie Cassidy places importance on mental health awareness.

What I enjoy in ‘Leaking Love’ is the effective elocution of a person’s conflicting emotions when living with depression.  Beginning with the protagonist’s description of depression, to a desperate longing for his love to acknowledge his attempt to change, and finally a questioning of whether they are willing to stay in his life while he tries to change…but, then again, this transition is overwhelming.  The final words are, ‘I pray this is not the end I see’ – the end of relationships, change, his life?

Despite the dysphoric theme of Maggie Cassidy’s music, they can make the songs addictive from a melodic perspective.  The strong guitar riffs, steady drum beats, and Jamie’s polished baritone merge smoothly to make the performance seem effortless.  It’s natural, intuitive, and just…there; as if it had always been there.

Overall, Maggie Cassidy’s ‘Leaking Love’ is a song I would recommend to anyone.  The issues discussed may leave you cold, but the song itself is a warm one enveloping you in love.  ‘Leaking Love’ can be found on Amazon and Deezer.  The band has also released an official video of the single release day which can be found on YouTube.
