Magdalia – Tunnel Vision (2023)

From TJPL News to Senocular Media, Sinusoidal Music, Mesmerized and Pario Magazine, singer-songwriter Magdalia is reaching audiences on an international scale. Described as “powerful and soulful…” (Find No Enemy), “beguiling…” (Music Arena GH) and “masterful…” (TJPL News), it’s clear that Magdalia is hypnotising critics and listeners alike. Using her natural storytelling skills, the Australian songstress wraps you in intimate tales while cradling you in the palm of her hand. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Tunnel Vision’.

Penned in collaboration with Jarred Young and Elizabeth Drummond during her Cardinia Music Residency in 2022, Magdalia once again explores the complexity of human relationships with elegance and charm. Following her single ‘Great Expectations’, ‘Tunnel Vision’ relates with audiences as it “…tells the familiar story of a friend taking from a relationship until there is nothing left” Exploring human fragility, she expresses the strong feelings of frustration, turmoil, anxiety and vulnerability in the new song.

Often compared to the likes of Florence Welch, Lorde and Taylor Swift, we can imagine Magdalia to have a powerful, eclectic and infectious sound – and this is just what we receive. Just as I can agree with these comparisons, I also believe there is a uniqueness in Magdalia’s style. With ‘Tunnel Vision’, she intertwines elements of indie-rock with dream-pop and the dark ambience of alternative pop.

As with ‘Great Expectations’, Magdalia presents an obscurity in her vocal execution that both soothes and disturbs the listener. Melding her deeper timber and tone with a pop melody lurking beneath, there is a juxtaposition between light-hearted commercial pop and a more poignant, soul-stirring gothic darkness. Ensnaring you in a soul-stirring trap of music, you are drawn into an intimate embrace with ‘Tunnel Vision’.
