Magdalia – Fault Lines (2023)

Floating between the sounds of Florence + The Machine, Dido and Sia, but with a unique flair, singer-songwriter Magdalia brings us something fresh but familiar. Describing her sound as ethereal and soft, the Melbourne-based artist has an affinity for moving storytelling in delicate tones. Yet, just as the artist is elegantly delicate, there is a confidence woven into her engaging performances and melodies. We came across Magdalia with her debut single ‘Shy to Shine’ in 2021 and since then she has captured many hearts with her enchanting tunes. Moreover, her music captured the hearts on an international scale topping the Australian Atomic Music Charts, being voted as one of the Real Songwriters of Melbourne’s Top 5 Songs of the Year, and qualifying for the Grand Final of the 2023 Listen Up Songwriting Prize.

Following her well-received single ‘Noreen’, chart-topping Magdalia blends bold beats with a distinctive piano and dynamic guitar in her latest single ‘Fault Lines’. The thing is, just as the melody has a kaleidoscopic swirl of instrumentation, there is a simplistic tenderness slivering through the song. This might be because of her skill to part the walls of sound exposing a golden path to the core of ‘Fault Lines’. A guiding voice leading you through the flickers of bright sonic lights to a hopeful end – unfortunately not all that hopeful in the theme of ‘Fault Lines’.

Known for her impactful storytelling, Magdalia takes on the Shakespearean tragedy in the uplifting ‘Fault Lines’. Like Antony and Cleopatra, Berowne and Rosaline, and Hermia and Lysander, Magdalia tells the tale of a beautiful romance; however, as with Romeo and Juliet, the lovers are ultimately doomed to failure. What I find particularly interesting, is how the music perfectly intertwines with the tragic vulnerability of our lovers. Moreover, the bold but light-hearted pop tones acknowledge how they fight for their love but an overwhelming depth of despair kicks in as the relationship ends.

Touching and tender, Magdalia sets your soul-stirring and has the tears flowing with her new single, ‘Fault Lines’.
