Maddy Suppez – Catch and Release (2023)

Harmony, healing and hope – Maddy Suppez captures the core of these themes in her moving melodies. Hailing from the USA, singer-songwriter Maddy Suppez takes rap and hip hop fusing them with a neo-soul twist and edgy pop beats. This is our introduction to Suppez, but she is well-received by various blogs and playlists far beyond her US borders. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Catch and Release’.

Hot on the heels of her full-length album 111, ‘Catch and Release” is Suppez’s ninth single this year alone. Based on Spotify, she made her debut in 2022 with the bad beginning and has been honing her craft over the past year and a bit. Still brimming with raw innocence and a gritty edge, listening to Suppez is like tearing the band-aid off an open wound. Vulnerability and fragility break through but within a swoosh of sophisticated, elegant production.

Inspired by the likes of Erykah Badu and Aaron May, the obscurity of ‘Catch and Release’ can be expected. Yet, while the off-kilter soulfulness of Badu brings a soothing vibe, Suppez’s contemporary rap sound weaves through the shining flutters of neo-soul. This fusion of such diverse genres showcases Suppez’s innovation and versatility as an artist.

One aspect I find intriguing about ‘Catch and Release’ is not merely the fusion of smooth and scratchy but the interplay between the two. Catchy choruses seem to embrace you with a comforting smile while the verses bring a brutal honesty in a sharp biting way. Inspired by humanity in today’s reality, the song represents a “push and pull” nature but in a hopeful, harmonic way. Maddy Suppez explains:

“’Catch and Release’ is an essential song to remind us that life is a give and take. It is important to release the negative emotions and pressure that we feel on a day-to-day basis replacing it with positive, grateful thoughts…catching a releasing what does and does not serve us.”
