Maddy Carty – Little One (2024)

Raw honesty and pure emotion wrapped in passionate melodies with tender vocals – this is Maddy Carty. Known for her encouraging and empowering music, Carty not only sets you off on a wistful dream but also ignites the flame of hope, strength and positivity in your breast. A couple of years ago she slithered into our ears with the pop meets RnB single ‘Playing With Fire’ evoking an “emotive heat resting within its elegant arrangement”. Skip ahead a couple of years and Carty saunters into 2024 with her new release ‘Little One’.

Re-emerging after a two-year break, the UK-based songstress shifts to a soulful pop ballad with folk-pop sentiments clinging to the song in ‘Little One’. Following well-received tracks ‘Playing With Fire’ and ‘I Can’t Wait’, ‘Little One’ brings things down with a soft, soothing and gentle melody. Recorded with producer and musician Alex Bayly, the single has a minimalistic, simplistic, almost barebones melody flourishing in sophistication and retaining a tender vulnerability in the flowing tune.

Despite being an acoustic piano and vocals ballad to touch your heart and soul with simplicity, there is a kaleidoscopic sheen fluttering across the basic arrangement. Well layered, the dual recording of Carty’s vocals – one prominent and the other backing – acts like a conversation with herself, as well as an affirmation of duality. Penned during her pregnancy, it is as if the backing vocal is further encouragement of her prominent thoughts. Carty explains:

“I started writing this song when I was pregnant and only really finished it once my son was born, so it feels like it’s between two worlds for me, the before and after. I think a lot of people will be able to relate to the feelings of super-high excitement mixed with absolute terror at times! We’re all just doing our best.”

In 2022, Maddy Carty released an acoustic video for ‘Little One’. You can view the video below or on her YouTube channel.
