Maddie Jackway – You Make Me Look Over My Shoulder (2024)

Weaving elements of pop, soul and RnB in a shimmering sonic tapestry, singer-songwriter Maddie Jackway can chill your bones, warm your heart and send you reeling with her music. With sophistication in her steady singles, Jackway’s tunes can fit perfectly on radio stations (in fact, her tunes have received positive feedback on radio stations); however, obscurity lurks within adding a haunting quality to each of her releases. Using her off-kilter vocals, this Australian singer-songwriter stands alone as something unique, intriguing and diverse. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘You Make Me Look Over My Shoulder’.

After years of establishing herself on the Australian pop music scene, Jackway returns to the studio with ‘You Make Me Look Over My Shoulder’. Co-produced with keyboardist and producer Jake Amy, this single is the lead track off her upcoming EP Kindred and sees an evolution in sound. Determined not to be “boxed into one genre”, Jackway’s sophomore EP allows audiences to “hear all of the different influences as a writer and musician…”

Standing in line with her desire to explore new sounds, ‘You Make Me Look Over My Shoulder’ steps away from her Adele-esque tone embracing a more mature, eclectic style. Finding the line between pop and RnB, Jackway’s soulful vocals flutter across the different genres; however, instead of adhering to the labels, she blurs everything with soul-tinged harmonies and indefinable percussion bringing up the rear. It is this innovation and eclecticism that makes ‘You Make Me Look Over My Shoulder’ not only impressive but a feast for the ears.

The melody offers a slow, soothing gentle sensation as if you are set adrift on a glistening sonic lake. Light ripples comfort you and Jackway’s warm vocals caress your face with a friendly embrace; however, an eerie mischievousness lurks beneath the water. Despite the confident execution and richness of her dulcet tones, raw vulnerability exists in Jackway’s voice delicately exposing the tumultuous waves of anxiety and turmoil. A perfect expression of the theme “detailing being ghosted by someone and the anxiety of when their paths will cross again…”

Sincere, simplistic, introspective and honest, Maddie Jackway tackles the intricacies of relationships with her new single ‘You Make Me Look Over My Shoulder’.
