Madame Psychosis – MP3 (2024)
While numerous artists hit my virtual desk, quickly garnering fans among The Other Side Reviews team, there are those that not only make an impression but are entirely, insatiably unforgettable. Madame Psychosis is one of these bands. Unafraid to tackle the grit and beauty of life, the Canada-based fivesome weaves social commentaries into their tunes lyrically and melodically. Yep, along with the words adding profoundness to the songs, Madame Psychosis capture the raw essence and emotion linked to the theme with vivid sounds. We began listening to the group earlier this year with the single ‘Hopeless’; today, we listen to a collection of their singles on their album, MP3.
On the heels of their well-received tracks ‘Foxtail’ and ‘Charlie’s Story’, Madame Psychosis released their third studio album, MP3. In a cohesive blend of 10 genre-diverse tracks, the group showcase not only their innovation but defies musical conventionalism at all costs. Sauntering through various types of rock, MP3 drifts from pop-rock in ‘I’ll Go’ to alternative rock in ‘Anywhere With You’ and indie-rock with ‘Foxtail’. True, each track presents its own unique hit of sound and style; however, an overlying layer of retro vibes exists threading together older eras in the ageless themes.
I can go on talking about the rollercoaster effect of MP3 and one’s immersion in the kaleidoscopic journey. The lifts and falls with each cleverly placed track oscillate between optimistic resilience to tragic vulnerability. Crashing drums pulsate beneath the singles, a bold bass steadies the line, and searing guitars add a flourish. Not only is the instrumentation significant as a part of the melody, but it also captures particular emotions, thoughts and opinions in a harmonic symphony. My personal favourite is the weightier hit of ‘Revolution’ where hard rock tones pump a need for change. Then again, the softer ‘I’ll Go’ captures sincere vulnerabilities.
Swimming across the spectrum of modern-day life, MP3 is a reflection of reality. Vocalist Michelle Mondesir explains:
“The world has gone through a lot and we wanted to create an album that acts as a reflection of the times… It is also meant to take you inward, understanding who you are, and then stepping out to interact with the world around you in a meaningful way.”
It is always difficult to choose a favourite track on albums, and MP3 is no different. The opening ‘I’ll Go’ and ‘Anywhere With You’ border on alternative rock holding your hand as you begin to walk through the grittiness of life. Yet, ‘’Vulnerability’ has slight obscurity in its sound. Then again, ‘Revolution’ oozes fiery forcefulness… it’s impossible. Add Mondesir’s bold, rich vocals and each track brims with Madame Psychosis’ eclecticism.
At the end of the day, I love everything about MP3; no favourites, just a marvellous experience from beginning to end.
