Madam Who? – Reclaim Your Power (2023)
After watching The Complete Beatles documentary on PBS with her mum, Madam Who? knew her life would be a musical one. Already learning to play the piano at home, Madam Who? was embracing music; however, she believed it was essential to play a guitar to be a Beatle. Unfortunately, while she learned to play the guitar, she was not a Beatle, but her journey was as exciting as Paul, John, George or Ringo.
While studying Music Business at Belmont University, the US-based artist toured America’s southeast and appeared on the Star Search reboot. Her band was flown to Los Angeles where they shared a stage with Godsmack and Queen. Set to perform at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom, head on a country-wide tour and perform at the American Music Awards, it seemed Madam Who? was on the track to musical success. Sadly, the events of September 11, 2001, broke what would be the group’s biggest break. The band dissolved and Madam Who? continued with life.
After a traumatic life event when two strangers rescued her and her daughter from drowning, Madam Who? picked up the pen after 15 years hiatus rushing into a flood of musical creation. After raising two children, writing books, building a house and overcoming a brain tumour, the US-based singer-songwriter delved into her well of emotions. Delicately capturing the bright and dark side of life, she used moving melodies to “inspire people of all ages…to follow their hearts and dreams no matter what life throws at you.”
Following her well-received singles ‘Strange & Beautiful – Summer Remix’ and ‘Shoo Fly (The Summer Song)’, Madam Who? shifts to a bolder rock sound in ‘Reclaim Your Power’. Reminding me almost instantaneously of 4 Non Blondes, Madam Who? seemed to tilt her hat at Linda Perry; however, while reminiscent there is an eclectic individuality to Madam Who?
Upbeat and buoyant from the opening, you have your toe tapping along to the beat. While ‘Reclaim Your Power’ has a pop meets hip-hop opening, the rush of alternative rock meets grunge floods our ears and continues with rambunctious punches. Hard-hitting, heavy and “in your face”, ‘Reclaim Your Power’ grips you sending one off on a sonic rollercoaster. For me, it is Madam Who?’s off-kilter vocals that bind everything capturing the essence of the single – affirmation, positivity, power and incredible rising from despair.
