Mad Painter – Rock and Roll Samurai (2023)

With their roots firmly planted in old-school rock and roll, US-based group Mad Painter takes you on a journey through the 70s and 80s with their psychedelic meets glam meets hard rock sound. Veteran rockers, all four artists are established in the Woodstock-era rock scene melding diverse styles and experiences. Performing in different line-ups and guises, the lads have made their way across the Boston circuit building a following among older and younger audiences. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Rock and Roll Samurai’.

This is my introduction to Mad Painter but, having grown up with bands like Uriah Heep blasting from the car speakers, I feel an instant draw to this band. Hard-hitting and filled with the grittiness of the 70s, dynamic guitars fuse effortlessly with the pounding drums. Interestingly enough, while the track has a gruffness to the melody, the underlying percussion, guitars and keys bring a soothing quality to the song. Mad Painter seems to find that delicate balance between soft, smooth and bold roughness in ‘Rock and Roll Samurai’.

As with their previous single ‘Illusion’, Mad Painter retains the soul-stirring retro rock style in ‘Rock and Roll Samurai’. As I mentioned, this is my introduction to the band, but they offer a comfortable, welcoming sonic embrace – like seeing an old friend after decades but it seems not a day has passed. Intoxicating, insatiable and intriguing, Mad Painter is the rock and roll samurai and I’m honoured to make their acquaintance.
