Macarena – Lágrimas (2021)
With a goal to “create a safe space for her listeners”, Macarena represents the struggles, hopes and future of the LGBTQ+ community. Based in Amsterdam, the Dutch artist combines elements of jazz, R&B, soul and alternative pop in her music. Since the release of her debut single in 2017, this lovely lady has received critical acclaim from notable blogs including Sinusoidal Music, The BOPS Collective, Rising Artists Blog, Less Than 1000 Followers and many more. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Lágrimas’.
Following her collaborative lo-fi single ‘Have Mercy’, Macarena adopts a more soulful and jazz-inspired sound in ‘Lágrimas’. Reminiscent of Erykah Badu with a contemporary twist, the songstress touches on creates a hazy ambience in the kaleidoscopic and intimate soundscape. While she is known for her ambient sounds with jazz-influenced undertones, the new single breaks boundaries not only in its melody but the lyricism as well.
Produced by Lady Groove, ‘Lágrimas’ has an alternative flow to the melody but with strong harmonies on her distinctive vocals. Yet, while the vocals have a soothing quality that captivates the mind, it is the lyrics themselves that really enhance the poignancy of the message. A bi-lingual single, Macarena showcases her ability to cross the cultural divide in a way that the message of overcoming generational cycles regarding homophobia is not lost in translation. The Spanish lyrics speak about feelings of hope and positivity while the English lyrics focus on distress, isolation and condemnation.
Inspired by her “coming out”, ‘Lágrimas’ is powerful and hard-hitting in a quiet, relaxed way. The smooth harmony between vocals and eclectic melodies showcases Macarena’s versatility and innovativeness as an artist. Overall, I really like the track – then again I like all of her music. This is merely another way Macarena makes a stand and shares her artistry with the world.
