Lyra – Time (2025)
Quickly establishing themselves as one of the more intriguing artists on the UK music scene, Lyra make their mark with confident performances, evocative melodies, and innovative compositions. From their 2016 single ‘Glad’ to 2023’s ‘Medusa’ and 2024’s ‘Rooftops’, the London-based quartet are not only in constant evolution but also stitching together different genres in a kaleidoscopic sonic quilt. With slicks of rock, pop, soul, funk and jazz, the band members’ diverse influences (from Beyonce to Avenged Sevenfold) transcend styles, decades, and conventionalism. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Time’.
Following the well-received singles ‘Rooftops’ and ‘France’, ‘Time’ is Lyra’s first step into 2025. Recorded and produced by Damage Audio’s Faz, ‘Time’ weaves elements of soul, funk and pop into that sonic quilt I was talking about. As much as a modern-day tinge clinging to ‘Time’, the track seems to mash vintage Motown with 80s synth-pop and hints of alternative rock clipped in the guitars. Melodically, ‘Time’ is a harmonic symphony of crashing drums, soaring guitars, a bold bass, shimmering synths (analogue style), and an “…organ connected to a leslie speaker…” introducing yesteryear to contemporary audiences.
The melody is enthralling as Lyra sets you adrift on a glistening river with an oscillation between smooth ripples and crashing waves. Interestingly, while the instrumentation already offers weightiness to a full-bodied song, the lyricism and theme are as weighty and profound. Celebrating life and living in the present, ‘Time’ “…is an anthem for people who treasure life and understand that their moment on this planet is limited…”
Confident and powerful with an empowering message of “well, you’re a waste of my time, I’d rather do something important”, Lyra pays attention to something we don’t necessarily consider: the inevitable passing of time. This is my introduction to Lyra, and if ‘Time’ is anything to go by I’m eager to hear more.
