Lyena – Keep Swimming (2021)

Lyena continues to encapsulate the angst of youth and tell their stories to the world with ‘Keep Swimming’. Offering a hopeful and dancing vibe, the single looks back on simpler times and confronts the fear many have when faced with the current world landscape. Packed with post-punk sounds, the energy will have you bouncing around your room or screaming your frustrations into a pillow.

With a livelier vibe than their single ‘Reign’, the band shows off their versatility. With honest and raw vocals, they draw on their own feelings for a relatable insight into the struggles of the last year. By the end of the track, you’ll be filled with a sense that you can push through these hard times even if you do it by treading water.

‘Keep Swimming’ thrums against your ears with a deep vibrating bass. The drums pound against your ears before the guitars grab you and shake your insides. There is a thrashing feeling to the melody that makes you want to bounce off the walls. The music is packed with an infectious energy that you get swept up in. This energy captures all the frustrations you might feel and throws it out into the ether.

The vocals have an honest vibe from the first moment as they let it all out. The harmonisations on the chorus provide a depth to the vocals while the main line grabs your frustrations and draws them out of your chest. The verses are able to paint the picture of life perfectly while tinged with the anger and frustration of living a mundane existence. Alongside this is a feeling of hope for the future and that things can change if we want them to. As the single comes to a close, you are filled with motivation and the strength to keep going or swimming.

Lyena draws all your frustrations and fears out before tossing them out the window in the energetic sound of ‘Keep Swimming’. The pace of the music makes you want to jump around as your insides start to shiver. The vocals are packed with frustration before swinging to motivation and the knowledge that you can get through everything if you just keep going.
