Lyena – Headlines (2020)
Someone once said that the best collaborations are the serendipitous ones – a fortunate accident. I can’t remember where I heard this but it rings true in the case of Lyena. The trio met in 2018 at a mutual friend’s show and discovered shared interest in loud, fast and energetic music. No time was wasted and the soon-to-be band hired a practice room the very next day. Two years, two singles and one EP later, Lyena are a well-known name in the underground circuit and have performed in the UK and Ireland. The latest addition to their repertoire is ‘Headlines‘.
Reminiscent of Queens of the Stone Age with a dash of The Clash and The Sex Pistols, Lyena’s second single ‘Headlines’ is lively and entertaining. Raw passion is seen through the harmonious merging of vocals, guitar and drums; however, as harmonious as the tune is it has a dark undertone. Similar to Sid Vicious and his crew, Lyena adopts a nihilistic approach to music. The track discusses mainstream media and the state of the nation through meaningless clickbait news. A stripping of UK society from the perspective of an angsty Millenial.
Using powerful guitar riffs, a dominant drumbeat and tongue-in-cheek vocals, ‘Headlines’ is a high-pace single with an anarchistic twist. As with The Sex Pistols, Lyena expresses discontent and lays bare the bones of modern society. A revolutionary track and trio, it’s clear to see why Lyena is quickly gaining a steady following.
