Luna Keller – Woman In My Mirror (2024)

Over the past few months, singer-songwriter Luna Keller allowed us a glimpse into the depths of depression – a tragedy with songs of despair, trauma and a glance at the deepest low of suicidal thoughts. Then again, just as we delved into the bad side of things, Keller brought us above water with songs like ‘Lighter Than Before’ and ‘Shoulder’ heading toward the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Woman In My Mirror’.

Tracking a journey through the ocean that is life, Keller’s previous release ‘Lighter Than Before’ surged with empowerment moving closer to a head above water. With ‘Woman In My Mirror’, the final track off her album Ocean Inside Of Me, she comes full circle from the desperate title track to a warm sense of acceptance. Interestingly, ‘Woman In My Mirror’ was penned in 2019 before Keller experienced depression before she entered the tumultuous ocean. It became her daily mantra supporting her through life; thus, it makes sense that this single should be the uplifting final verse to her story.

Recorded with long-time collaborator Dominic Romano, ‘Woman In My Mirror’ is a soothing concoction of acoustic guitar, subdued banjo (courtesy of Daisy Chute) and Keller’s heartfelt vocals. Simplistic in its sound, ‘Woman In My Mirror’ taps at the core of human emotion tugging at your heart with its tender strings; however, just as simplicity exudes from the track, there is a kaleidoscopic sentimentality as Keller takes you through each emotion from loss, yearning, vulnerability and fragility to optimistic understanding and acceptance of oneself.

Keller’s music always tugs at my heart with her ability to bring comfort to darkness but retain sparse vulnerability in every space. ‘Woman In My Mirror’ seems an apt closing to what has been a turbulent album. The intriguing aspect of ‘Woman In My Mirror’ is not the relief of finding your way but the hushed contentment, not a brazen “oh, look at me I made it”. The final words, “you’re beautiful” is a final brush of light giving you a happy sense of “now I am really free to be me”.

“I always knew that ‘Woman In My Mirror had to be closing track of Ocean Inside Of Me because what I learned from going through depression is that the goal is not happiness or to never struggle again. The goal is to have a good relationship with myself so that I can cope with my struggles in healthy, kind and loving ways…” – Luna Keller on ‘Woman In My Mirror’
