Luna Keller – Patterns (2023)

From Jamiroquai’s ‘Virtual Insanity’ to The Cranberries’ ‘Zombie’ and The Beatles’ ‘Yesterday’, songs across the ages have dealt with the inner workings of humanity, be it personal or political. For singer-songwriter Luna Keller, the in-depth profoundness of her contemplative themes meld with a toe-tapping and tender melody. So, in other words, she resonates on a deeper level but keeps you grinning in a sonic whirl of bliss.

Following ‘Ocean Inside Of Me’ and ‘Invisible Wars’, Germany-based Keller ended 2023 with the indie-folk single ‘Patterns’. Penned as the third chapter from her album Ocean Inside Of Me, ‘Patterns’ once again explores the inner turmoil and conflict of living with depression. Focusing on mental health issues, Keller’s songs use a narrative to both embody and expose significant challenges in a journey of self-growth. Her personal insight into living with depression grips the grimy side of emotions and helps navigate a world of despair, turmoil and anxiety.

“When I was depressed, I knew that none of my coping methods were productive and that I was hurting myself, but I still stayed in these places for more than a year before I had the courage to reach out for help… We all have our shadows and patterns, but they will never determine our worth. Whatever you might be going through, be kind to yourself. I hope this song can be there for you when you need it, as it has been for me.” – Luna Keller on ‘Patterns’

A distinctive folk sound oozes from Keller’s singles and ‘Patterns’ is no different. While her repertoire could be categorized as folk, there is an obscure off-kilter lilt to Keller’s vocals and instrumentation. ‘Invisible Wars’ drew on the tear-jerking serenity of strings; however, ‘Patterns’ attaches a toe-tapping bounce to the arrangement of piano, guitars and underlying strings. Interestingly, while ‘Patterns’ appears laidback with a shimmer of joy fluttering along the melody, darkness creeps through offering a skin-chilling haunting.

In addition to the single, Luna Keller released an official music video for ‘Patterns’. You can view the video below or on her YouTube channel.
