LUNA & The Gents – Je ne Peux Pas T’Oublier (2025)
While they might describe themselves as “swinging vintage pop” on Spotify, LUNA & The Gents is anything but definable. Traipsing through the realms of pop, folk, jazz, soul, swing, and pretty much anything that takes one’s fancy, the Switzerland-based quintet are no one-trick pony. Drawing together the musical stylings of Evelyne Péquignot (vocals), Matthias van Stipriaan (guitars), Yves de Groot (keys), Rainer Schudel (bass), Andy Lang (drums), and producer/songwriter Leendert van Stipriaan, LUNA & The Gents offer intrigue, inspiration and intoxication with their music. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Je Ne Peux Pas T’Oublier’.
Following the debut single, ‘Perfect Day’, ‘Je Ne Peux Pas T’Oublier’ is a tender concoction of old-school soul and classic rock. Not a song to be heard but rather experienced, LUNA & The Gents set you adrift on a glistening sonic river with ‘Je Ne Peux Pas T’Oublier’. Bold drums fall across the bass, while keyboards shimmer in the background with glistening charm. The soaring guitar adds a rock-inspired fleck, so while the single brims with soul, there is a rock edge rushing through it. Yet, as much as the melody wins your heart, it is Péquignot’s soulful vocals that send chills down your spine, tingles up your arms, and tugging at your heartstrings.
An autobiographical song, ‘Je Ne Peux Pas T’Oublier’ is a love story about two students who met at a wedding, become pen pals, and ultimately fell in love. Unfortunately, with one based in France and the other in Switzerland, the difference in culture and countries ended what might have been an epic romance. Honestly, I don’t understand a word of French, but ‘Je Ne Peux Pas T’Oublier’ transcends language with its raw passion and heartfelt sincerity. One might go as far to say this tragic love song demands a romantic language, and LUNA & The Gents bring that special something-something to our ears.
