LUMER- English Dream (2022)

The influence of the post-punk band Gang of Four exerted, as far as musical chops are concerned, is practically immeasurable. Their incorporation of funk and soul jazz into new wave and post-punk has influenced so many bands. Still, what about that band’s political and social commentary, particularly concerning Great Britain? There, you would have to do a detailed search but that search, as far as the current music scene is concerned, can start (and possibly stop) with the UK-based LUMER and their latest single ‘English Dream’.

Picking up here on the guitar/bass interaction so many bands did but giving it a more modern veneer, LUMER also picks up on the Gang of Four scorching commentary style, yet uses their own words and view. Talking about the track, lead singer Alex Evans had this to say: “’English Dream’ tries to epitomise my cynical view of my country. Why are you supposed to put so much in for very little in return? There is this constant battle it seems to find any form of joy in the political and social climate that we are currently surrounded by. I feel that we have to crawl on our knees for our leaders whilst very little is being done in protest from our people”.

And frankly, both the music and the lyrics of LUMER and their ‘English Dream’ send quite a powerful message.
